White picket fence……syndrome?

Well, it finally happened!  After many years of dreaming of a home surrounded by a white picket fence, I finally have one.  A cute, little cape cod on a tree lined street…and now a white picket fence.

After spending hours painting the new fence a pristine white, a friend made the statement that it “begs the question, ‘Why a white picket fence?’”  Hhhhhmmmm…I began to wonder.  What was it about a white picket fence that has had me so captivated since I was a child?

So I decided to google it.  And there it was.  Urban Dictionary’s definition of “white picket fence”…only they added the word “syndrome”.

That’s right…I have “white picket fence syndrome”.

It’s defined as “a state of mind where a person blindly holds on to the idea of their perfect lifestyle, regardless of the inevitable life factors that make it impossible for it to be true.”

Scoff! Hiss!! Boo!!  That couldn’t be.

Oh. No wait.  Not so fast.

That just might be a little bit true.  It occurred to me that for most of my life, I’ve held “the idea of a perfect lifestyle, regardless of the inevitable life factors that make it impossible.” And not in a Polly Anna sort of way because life has certainly doled out its share of ups and downs, realities, and challenges.

The more I thought about it the more I realized that the reality of life is that “shift happens”.  That’s right!  “Shift happens”….I bet you thought that was a type-o.  😉

Shift has definitely happened in my life and I’d venture a guess that it has happened to you, as well.  Each up or down, reality or challenge was there to teach me and help me to grow and to offer the opportunity to shift my thinking, decisions and direction.  Without all of those shift, I’m not so sure life would have lead me to this amazing life I now live…this “perfect lifestyle, regardless of the inevitable life factors that make it impossible for it to be true”. ….in a cute, little cape cod, on a tree lined street and a yard surround with a white picket fence.

And for “those inevitable life factors” that continue to teach and lead me?  I say thank you.

  1. It’s interesting to learn that there’s this thing called as white picket fence syndrome where you picture a perfect lifestyle in relation to white picket fences. That’s amazing since I do notice a lot of white picket fences around my area too. The thing is white was never my color so that’s why I had other colors in mind for my picket fence installation project. Thanks for the informative read about white picket fence syndrome!
